Yulin HuangShrewsbury – Yulin Huang, 67, recently of Shrewsbury and previously of Westborough and Westwood, passed away at home on the morning of February 4, 2023. He had been undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer for the last two years. He was in the loving presence of his wife Keling Dong, also of Shrewsbury, and their son Shuo Jim Huang (m. Andrea D. Peterson), of Silver Spring, Maryland.

In addition to his wife, son, and daughter-in-law, Yulin is survived by his sister, Yuxiu Huang (m. Gang Cui) of Qingdao, China, his niece Xin Cui, as well as many extended family, and many dear friends.

Born in the coastal city of Qingdao, China, his late parents were Weixian Huang and Xi Lin. He was the grandson of the poet, artist, and literary scholar Xiao-Yu Huang (1900-1964). After college, Yulin married Keling–a childhood friend and his wife of 39 years. He immigrated to the US in 1986, acquiring his PhD in physics and honing his scientific training in Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, and Florida, before falling in love with Massachusetts where he lived for the rest of his life.

During his career, he worked for Northeastern University, Applied Biosystems, and Linden Technologies, before retiring as a senior scientist for Vertex Pharmaceuticals working on research important to treating cystic fibrosis and cancer, among many other conditions.

Yulin loved his friends and family, the seaside, hiking in New England’s mountains and forests, travel, painting, photography, calligraphy, reading and writing poetry, making old favorite meals and discovering new recipes, art museums, Renaissance art, and history.

Family and close friends are invited to attend calling hours from 9:30 to 11 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM, in the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, on Thursday, February 9. A procession to Rural Crematory, Worcester, will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Yulin’s memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to any local organization that provides access to healthcare resources.
