ACTION 7 NEWS REPORTER ANDRES VALLE IS THERE LIVE WHERE AUTHORITIES SAY THE SUSPECT ACTUALLY BROUGHT THE VICTIM’S BODY WITH HIM WHEN HE SURRENDERED? DOUG SHELLY, I’M SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT WHERE RIO RANCHO POLICE SAY THEY DISCOVERED THE BODY OF JORDAN GALLEGOS. THIS AFTER HER BOYFRIEND, 23 YEAR OLD MATTHEW CHAVEZ, CONFESSED TO SHOOTING AND KILLING HER. NOW, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ORGANIZATIONS ARE SOUNDING THE ALARM. IT’S ABOUT A DANGEROUS TREND. THEY’RE SEEING. WE RANK SECOND HIGHEST IN THE COUNTRY FOR HOMICIDES RIGHT NOW FOR THE SECOND MOST VIOLENT AND A MAJORITY OF THEM ARE INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE. POLICE SAY 23 YEAR OLD MATTHEW CHAVEZ KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND, 21 YEAR OLD JORDAN GALLEGOS, OVER THE WEEKEND. ACCORDING TO POLICE REPORTS, CHAVEZ’S SISTER GOT A PHONE CALL THAT MATTHEW HAD SHOT SOMEONE. THE REPORT SAYS CHAVEZ DROVE TO HIS SISTER’S HOUSE TO CONFESS THAT HE HAD KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND. SHORTLY AFTER CHAVEZ LEFT, HIS FAMILY CALLED RIO RANCHO POLICE. POLICE SAY CHAVEZ MADE HIS WAY ON TO PASEO DEL NORTE TO SEE HIS GIRLFRIEND’S BODY IN THE BACKSEAT. POLICE SAY THEY CALLED CHAVEZ AND CONVINCED HIM TO COME BACK TO RIO RANCHO. MEETING AT THE PREMIERE MOVIE THEATER PARKING LOT, CHAVEZ SURRENDERED THERE. AND THAT’S WHEN POLICE SAY THEY FOUND GALLEGOS BODY. THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ALWAYS GO OUT TO FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES TO INTIMATE PARTNER IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. IT’S A TRAGIC CITY. MARY ELLEN GARCIA FROM THE NEW MEXICO COALITION ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TELLING KOAT THAT THEY’RE SEEING A TREND IN INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE. IT’S SO INCREDIBLY COMMON RIGHT NOW. THIS IS ONE OF MANY CASES OVER THE LAST WEEK IN OUR COMMUNITIES HERE IN NEW MEXICO ALONE. GARCIA ADDING THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE SEEING A CONCERNING TREND, THAT YOU CAN STILL HAVE LOVED ONES WHO MAY BE FACING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. BUT DID WE HAVE THAT POSSIBLY 15 SECOND UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION TO OPEN THE DOOR AND IT MIGHT NOT TURN OUT WELL IN THAT MOMENT? IF IT IS AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP, BUT THAT PERSON KNOWS THAT YOU’RE THERE AND IT CREATES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO THEN POSSIBLY SPEAK OUT. AND CHAVEZ’S CURRENTLY BOOKED IN THE SANDOVAL COUNTY DETENTION CENTER ON ONE COUNT OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER. THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL ONGOING. REPORTIN
