Valentine’s Ball, ‘Mortified,’ and Portland Jazz Festival: 10 things to do this week

We’ve made it halfway through February are knocking on the door of Valentine’s Day. Need some ideas for a fun evening out? If you don’t have plans yet, Vancouver hosts an annual family Valentine’s Day Ball for all ages. The week also offers several visual arts shows, a few theater events, and the kickoff of the annual Biamp Portland Jazz Festival.

Although the state-wide indoor COVID-19 mask mandate has lifted, some venues or artists still have restrictions in place. Check venue websites for information on specific COVID safety requirements.

Vancouver Family Valentine’s Ball

Returning in February 2023 after a two-year hiatus, this popular family event celebrates the love of birth, adopted or chosen families in a fun, welcoming environment. Get dressed up in your party best for one of two evenings where all ages can enjoy DJ music, dancing, and light refreshments. There will also be a photo booth and arts and crafts.

Creative Spirit Show of Fine Art & Craft

The Westminster Cloisters Studio welcomes guests to view artwork including oil paintings, ceramics, paper collage, photography and more. The opening reception incudes catered small bites and desserts, champagne, live music, and a chance to meet featured artists.

“Play That Goes Wrong”

Magenta Theater presents the play by Henry Lewis, Henry Shields, and Jonathan Sayer directed by Bryan Schmidt. In this mischievous comedy, a university murder mystery play goes horribly wrong. The 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show —an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything — including their lines.

“The Mad Ones”

The Young Professionals Company of Oregon Children’s Theatre presents a coming-of-age musical by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk at CoHo Theatre. The play tells the story of a high school senior contemplating her future following the death of her best friend. Andrea White directs. Recommended for ages 14 and older.

“Mortified”

Musician, filmmaker and historian Julian Saporiti brings his immersive multimedia work to the Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro. Enjoy storytelling in the Asian American folk tradition that blends original songs, film and projected archival images.

“Hito Steyerl: This is the Future”

The Portland Art Museum welcomes the influential German artist in an immersive exhibition that reflects on climate change, artificial intelligence, and human resilience. This will be the U.S. premiere of these works. Steyerl’s show makes its point using an imagined vibrant garden coupled with video projections, sculpture and spatial intervention.

Bob Moore’s 94th Birthday Party

Bob Moore, founder and president of Oregon-based Bob’s Red Mill, is celebrating another year around the sun, his 94th in fact. The Oregonian whose flours and grains have become a staple in supermarkets across the U.S., and even in Japan and the Middle East, will be celebrated with an event featuring tasty treats, live music and a chance to wish Bob all the best.

Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show

It’s called “The Big One” for a reason. The 2023 Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show presented by Leupold returns to the Portland Expo Center with some of your longtime favorite events back in full force. This indoor showcase will take up 350,000 square feet of the Expo Center. Check out the kids’ free trout pond, kayak fishing seminars, and the Head and Horns Competition. A new event, Camp Eureka, highlights three camping styles and offers the gear you need to try it yourself. If you need a new rod, ammo, specific clothing items, this is the show for you.

Biamp Portland Jazz Festival

Ready to heat up your winter with 10 days of hot jazz music? The Portland Jazz Festival welcomes an all-star lineup of musicians and singers including Charlie Musselwhite, Angelique Kidjo, Dave Holland, Storm Large, and Hiatus Kaiyote. This 20th anniversary festival also offers a long slate of free events including performances and lectures. The entire festival schedule is available at the website.
