Islam Makhachev is not seeing much of a future for Michael Chandler.

The UFC lightweight division has historically been one of the most exciting in the organization. The entire top five of the division are all superstars and immensely talented. For years the champion at 155 pounds has been highly ranked on the pound-for-pound list and now is no different. Champion Islam Makhachev is looking to secure that number one P4P spot when he defeats featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284.

Although Makhachev has his hands full with the current P4P number one, he is still keeping an eye on the rest of the division. One fight that has the attention of many in the MMA community is the upcoming bout between Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor. Both men have been crucial parts of the lightweight division for some time and although this fight will be contested at 170 pounds, the result could still hold weight in the lightweight division.

Islam Makhachev thinks that win or lose, Michael Chandler might retire after his fight With McGregor

Many are looking forward to the return of McGregor. When it was announced that he would be coaching the next season of The Ultimate Fighters it was clear that Chandler wanted in. He got his wish and now will be headed towards the biggest fight of his life. It is no secret that many UFC fighters want a bout against McGregor. It comes with fame and a huge paycheck. Makhachev thinks this is Chandler’s last fight, he feels he is taking the money and running.

“I think for Chandler this fight, it’s last fight for him,” he said to ESPN. “He’s gonna make money and that’s it, he’s gonna retire or if he lose maybe UFC should kick him out because how many times he lose?”

Chandler came to the UFC back in 2020 and has gone 2-3 since then. He is currently ranked fifth in the division despite three losses to top contenders. He continues to have his sights set on a title shot and perhaps with a win over McGregor could make a case for one soon.
