Police say a suspect has been arrested after a fatal stabbing at a North Las Vegas Walmart on Tuesday.
Yaroslan Granda Ruedas, 39, was booked on suspicion of open murder with a deadly weapon, according to North Las Vegas Police.
A fight was reported at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Simmons Street at Ann Road at about 11:45 a.m., police previously said.
Officers arrived to find a man injured and bleeding. He was taken to UMC where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives learned the victim was stabbed during the fight, and police said a person of interest was detained.
According to an arrest report, an employee at an office in the shopping center identified Granda as the suspect in the stabbing. She told police he was in their office "acting irrationally and aggressively" as he tried to cash in a life insurance policy. He became even more upset when told the policy had no cash value, and the employee said she called Granda's wife to tell her about Granda's behavior.
His wife later arrived to talk to the police. She said Granda had been experiencing mental health issues, the report states, and she tried to get a court order to force him to get help.
Witnesses said they saw the fight, with one person saying Granda got out of his car with a knife and stab the victim three times in the back. One person said the victim got up and tried running away, and Granda chased after him.
Granda eventually turned himself in, police wrote. He claimed that as he was leaving the parking lot, another car hit the back of his car. He said the driver of the other car got out to approach him and claimed the driver was reaching for his waist area. Granda said he took a knife out of his glove box and rushed the victim, who struck Granda in the back of his head with a pipe.
Detectives asked him why he didn't call the police or drive away from the scene. Granda claimed everything happened too fast and he didn't think he had time to safely drive away.
"We told him the people at [redacted] said he was irritated and aggressive," the report states. "He stated he was not and that they were lying."
