Under-20 Six Nations: Scotland v Wales

Scotland (8) 18

Tries: Brown, penalty try Pens: Afshar, King

Wales (0) 17

Tries: Morse, Andrews Cons: Edwards 2 Pens: Edwards

A late penalty from Scotland full-back Dan King was enough to earn his side a close-fought win over Wales.

Rudi Brown crossed early for Scotland, who were awarded a second-half penalty try.

Wales managed tries for Morgan Morse and Oli Andrew while depleted by yellow cards for Archie Hughes, Dylan Kelleher-Griffiths and Morgan Morse in middle of the encounter.

Wales also suffered a fourth sin-binning late on for Lewis Lloyd.

Scotland, who lost prop Callum Norrie to injury early on, soon took advantage of having the wind at their backs when they kicked a penalty to the corner and flanker Brown drove over in an impressive rolling maul after 10 minutes.

Both sides were restricted to half-chances for much of the remainder of the first half, with a 40-metre Ben Afshar penalty extending Scotland's lead on the half-hour mark.

But after home wing Ben Evans almost raced clear from half-way, Wales scrum-half Hughes was sin-binned for a ruck infringement as the latest in a series of penalties awarded by Australia referee Reuben Keane.

Prop Kelleher-Griffiths followed him to the sidelines in the closing seconds of the half with the Scots imposing constant pressure.

Afshar was grounded half a metre short and the Scottish forwards were held up over the line as 13-man Wales somehow survived until the interval, having also seen number eight Huw Davies carried off with a leg injury.

Remarkably the visitors came out firing and scored while two men down, back-rower Morse powering over from a scrum-five for Dan Edwards to convert.

But Morse was quickly in trouble at the other end as he conceded a penalty try and was yellow-carded for dragging down a maul, leaving Wales still with 14 just as Kelleher-Griffiths returned.

They were not deterred with Edwards landing a penalty and then converting a beautifully-taken try from wing Andrew, who beat three defenders to finish wide out, only to be injured while stretching out to score.

Home full-back King blasted over a penalty into the wind and rain to put Scotland back ahead after 70 minutes.

He missed two more attempts at goal, but the kicks served to play out time as hooker Lloyd became the fourth Welshman to see yellow in the final minute for a dangerous tackle.

It was Wales' second defeat after losing to Ireland in the opener while Scotland had lost against England.

Elsewhere England beat Italy 32-25 at Gloucester while Ireland squeezed past France 33-31 in Cork.

Round three of the tournament on Friday, 24 February sees Scotland travel to face France in Agen, Wales host England in Colwyn Bay while Ireland travel to Treviso to face Italy.
