Hudson County youngsters are headed to the Big Apple where they’ll be performing on stage for TADA! Youth Theater’s “Princess Phooey,” an original production, from Feb. 10 through Feb. 26 at TADA! Youth Theater, in Manhattan.
The titular character of Princess Phooey isn’t the kind of princess that needs to be rescued by a Prince, try as he might, nor does she want to smile or curtsy. She’d rather be running around with the castle’s chambermaids and stable boys.
Her older sister Elessia, along with the Good Fairies, try to make Phooey into what they consider a proper princess, while Morbidia has other plans for them all. “Princess Phooey” book and lyrics are by Lisa Diana Shapiro with music by Eric Rockwell.
Performed by members of the Resident Youth Ensemble of TADA! (RYET), Jersey City cast members featured in “Princess Phooey” include Sophia Donath, 16, as Splenda; Hans Gabriel Olano, 10, as Tertius; Lukas Mufute, 12, as Sixtamus, and Emma Origenes, 10, as Dot.
“I was born and raised in Jersey City. On our side of the river, we see the New York City skyline, and on the New York City side, they can see a developing Jersey City,” said Emma. “My character Dot is mischievous and gets reprimanded often for her adventures around the castle. She is very curious, especially when she hears or sees something interesting, and she must investigate.
“Dot and I are similar because I am also very mischievous,” she said. “My experience at TADA! has been very positive. I have made new friends, and everyone is very supportive and caring. I am also learning to develop my acting, singing and dancing talents. I am very excited to appear on stage and can’t wait for everyone to be amazed by this talented cast and crew!”
Also a part of the cast from Hoboken is Max Suspitsyn, age 10, who is featured in the production as Quartos.
“TADA! is fun, and I’m very excited to appear on stage with my new friends,” said Suspitsyn. “This is my first year, and there are so many really cool activities. TADA! helps you learn new techniques to get better and improve on stage and beyond.”
