It can be difficult to keep up with the various Iowa State sports going on during this time of the year.

So, to help keep things simple, here is a quick recap of Cyclone sports so far this season and a glimpse into what’s to come.

Men’s basketball

The Iowa State men’s basketball team is currently 22 games into the season with eight games remaining until the Big 12 tournament starting March 8.

Additionally, the Cyclones have a 16-6 record and are 7-3 in the Big 12 so far, along with a fighting chance for first place in the Big 12.

While the team has struggled to win on the road, such as blowing a 23-point lead against Texas Tech, they remain undefeated at Hilton Coliseum and just grabbed a big 68-53 win over Kansas on Saturday.

The win over the Jayhawks was their fourth top-ten win this season, the most in school history in a single season. The Cyclones also moved up two spots in the top 25 AP Poll, from No. 13 to No. 11.

The team will play again Wednesday evening for a road game against West Virginia.

Women’s basketball

The Iowa State women’s basketball team has also had successes throughout the season so far. The team has a 15-6 record with a 7-4 record in the Big 12 conference, where they currently stand in fourth place.

The Cyclone women have also struggled with road wins and just recently lost at home to Baylor, 76-70, their first loss at home this season.

That loss put the Cyclones at No. 21 in the AP poll, ten spots below their previous ranking.

However, just like the men, the women will travel to West Virginia to play on Saturday, giving them another opportunity for not just a road win but a bounce-back win from their loss to the Bears.

The Big 12 tournament for women’s basketball will begin March 9.

Wrestling

Iowa State wrestling is currently No. 3 in the country, just below Iowa and Penn State, the only teams they’ve lost to. The Cyclones are undefeated in the Big 12 and have a 14-2 overall record.

Iowa State wrestling is coming off a 16-15 road win over Pittsburgh and will have another road meet on Friday against Northern Iowa before they return to Ames on Sunday to compete against Illinois.

The Cyclones have four meets remaining before their Big 12 tournament begins March 4 and the NCAA Championships begin March 16.

Gymnastics

Iowa State gymnastics just recently started their season at the beginning of January but have already competed in five meets.

The Cyclones are 6-3 on the season but have not yet grabbed a win in the Big 12. Those Big 12 losses came from West Virginia and No. 1 Oklahoma.

West Virginia and Oklahoma are the only Big 12 teams that Iowa State will compete against this season, but meets against the Iowa Hawkeyes and No. 5 UCLA are ones to look forward to.

Nonetheless, the gymnasts remain undefeated at home and will return to Hilton Coliseum on Sunday for the Beauty and the Beast meet with the wrestling team.

Track & Field

The Iowa State track and field team is currently in its indoor season before its outdoor season begins March 17.

Because the indoor track season is focused more on personal goals and personal bests, Iowa State does not keep track of its wins and losses.

However, the Cyclones have had multiple records, such as a school record, 11 all-time top-10 performances and eight event titles at their most recent meet, the Iowa State Classic.

Additionally, the men’s team started the week off with five top-15-ranked events, with the women’s team having four events ranked in the top 20.

Cyclone track and field will travel to Seattle, Washington to compete in the Husky Classic on Friday.

Tennis

The Iowa State tennis team has also had recent program successes. The Cyclones are currently on a four-game winning streak, along with a 6-1 overall record. Their only loss was to No. 15 Auburn Jan. 20.

Additionally, they grabbed the highest-ranked win in program history when the No. 24 Cyclones beat No. 18 UCLA Jan. 28.

The Cyclones then grabbed a second big win after beating No. 10 Miami, which also earned them a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championships Feb. 10-13.

Following those wins, the Iowa State tennis team then earned themselves the best ranking in school history after coming in at No. 14.

The ITA Indoor National Championships will have the next matches for the Cyclones, where they will have the opportunity to continue their success.

Swimming & diving

Iowa State swimming and diving will prepare for the Big 12 time trials and the Big 12 Championships Feb. 22.

The Cyclones are 6-3 in dual meets but recently lost to Kansas, 174-126, Feb. 3 after being on a three-game winning streak.

Additionally, they are 1-2 in conference meets with a win over TCU on the road.

Following the Big 12 Championships, they will compete in the Last Chance Meet in Austin, Texas before the NCAA Championships at the beginning of March.

Softball

Iowa State softball will begin its 2023 season on Friday when they will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to participate in the Doc Halverson UNI Dome Tournament.

The Cyclones will play Omaha, Drake and Northern Iowa starting at noon Friday and continuing through the weekend.

Golf

After a few months off, the Iowa State men’s and women’s golf teams have also just begun their winter/spring season.

The men’s golf team had their first match play Jan. 30 where they placed eighth out of fifteen at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Their next match will be from Feb. 20 through Feb. 22 at the Prestige at PGA West in California.

The Cyclones women’s golf team is wrapping up the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Florida and will compete in the Lamkin Invitational on Feb. 13 and 14.
