HONOLULU (KITV4) -- Some Oahu residents made an urgent plea on Tuesday in their fight to save free public parking at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.
The introduction of proposed Senate bill 1034, which outlines protection of nearly 300 free parking stalls by the Hilton Hotel, has gained the support of hundreds.
Local water men and women emphasized concerns of over-commercializing in an area deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and tradition. It's the reason supporters of the bill are reminding residents that Feb. 7 is the final day to provide oral testimony before the decision is taken on by state legislators.
“It goes back generations. Generations have been brought up in the boat harbor. It's state [owned] and it should stay state [owned]. Seeing strips and bits and pieces of the local community being pushed out of this beautiful place, be eradicated by some development that people will profit off, is just heartbreaking,” said Waikiki Beach Boy Thomas Vinigas.
The final chance to testify on SB 1034 is 1 p.m. Tuesday.
