Trial Date For Man Charged With Crash That Killed Rochester Woman
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man accused of causing the death of a 22-year-old woman in a traffic crash last year today entered not guilty pleas to criminal vehicular homicide charges.
21-year-old Deng Kwel was driving the car that slid out of control to the median on East Circle Drive and smashed into a minivan driven by Cynthia Gomez. The criminal complaint says she was traveling north when the collision with Kwel's southbound car occurred near the entrance to Quarry Hill Park on April 11.
The court document says several witnesses reported that Kwel was driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic just before his car went through the median, collided with the young woman's vehicle, and then rolled several times. A dash cam on one of the witness's vehicles recorded the deadly incident and the video showed that Kwel's car was partially airborne went smashed into the minivan. The criminal complaint indicates a reconstruction of the deadly collision estimated the speed of Kwel's car at around 90 mph.
The judge in the case today set his trial date for July 31. Kwel remains free without bail but with conditions set by the court.
