OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A spiritual adviser to several Oklahoma death row inmates is suing the state's Department of Corrections for defamation. In the federal lawsuit filed Friday in Oklahoma City, the Rev. Jeff Hood of Arkansas is seeking $10 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges the agency and its spokesman defamed him in a statement that said he was being denied access to the death chamber because of his history as an anti-death penalty activist. The statement indicated Hood had been arrested multiple times and “demonstrated a blatant disregard for the experience of victims' families.” The Department of Corrections ultimately reversed its decision and allowed Hood to be inside the execution chamber for the January execution of Scott Eizember.

MONTICELLO, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota utility has begun shutting down a nuclear power plant near Minneapolis after failing to stop the release of radioactive material. Officials say it is not dangerous, but nearby residents are concerned. Xcel Energy started shutting down the plant in Monticello on Friday. The utility's president says after it cools over the next few days, workers will cut out a pipe that is over 50 years old and had been leaking tritium. He says Xcel will then have the pipe analyzed in hopes of preventing similar leaks in the future. He says the spill has not left the utility’s property.

PERRIS, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died in a helicopter crash in Southern California. That's according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. The helicopter crashed in an unincorporated area of Perris. Two people were confirmed dead, but it was not immediately clear whether there were others aboard the helicopter. Additional details were not available. Perris is about 65 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

(AP) — Federal investigators say a small plane crash in Tennessee that killed diet guru Gwen Shamblin Lara and six others likely occurred when her husband became disoriented while piloting the aircraft in heavy clouds. That's according to a final report released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board. Joe Lara, an actor who played Tarzan on TV in the 1990s, was piloting a Cessna on March 29, 2021, when it crashed. The plane went down in a Tennessee lake minutes after takeoff from an airport near Nashville. Another pilot told investigators Lara would struggle when forced to rely on instruments in low visibility.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has overturned the murder conviction of a police officer convicted of killing a suicidal man. The appellate court ordered a new trial for former Huntsville officer William Ben Darby. The court, in tossing the conviction, agreed with Darby’s attorney that the trial judge should have given jurors different instructions on evaluating the reasonableness of Darby’s use of deadly force in that situation. Darby was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of murder for the on-duty shooting of Jeffery Parker in 2018. Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard told news outlets that they will prosecute the case again.
