NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A suspect is in custody after detectives say he fatally shot a man at an area bus stop, then ran into and later escaped the Chef Menteur Highway Walmart. Our news crew responded to the scene where multiple New Orleans Police Department units and a SWAT Team were working the incident.

Police say around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a man had been shot several times at a nearby bus station and died at the scene. He was later identified as 22-year-old Henry Johnson. Detectives believe the shooting may have been targeted.

We’re told the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Gregory Woods, then ran into the Walmart, leading police to lock down the building.

As detectives searched the building, patrons were let out of the store five at a time. When the store was emptied, it was determined that the suspect escaped.

Around 7 p.m., detectives say they were able to identify Woods as the perpetrator and issued an arrest warrant. He was later located in New Orleans East and arrested without incident.

Woods was booked into the Orleans Justice Center where he faces a second-degree murder charge.
