A Grand Junction man was arrested Sunday after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the head.

Adam Eugene Coy, 31, of 1002 Main St. E., Grand Junction, was charged with attempted murder, willful injury causing serious injury and first-offense domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury.

The incident began about 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Main Street E. in Grand Junction, where Coy allegedly “discharged a firearm in the direction of the victim with the intention to cause death,” according to court records.

The victim called 911 at 9:52 p.m. and reported that she “fell” and hit her head “against a door,” according to court records.

The Grand Junction First Responders and Greene County EMS responded, examined the victim and determined that a “bullet struck the victim in the back of the head, lodging inside of her and not exiting,” according to court records.

The incident was reported to the Greene County Sheriff’s office, which started an investigation, collected evidence and took Coy into custody. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation was called in to assist in the investigation.

Coy is held in the Greene County Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 15 in Greene County District Court.

Coy was arrested in Grand Junction in 2020 and charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct in an agreement with the Greene County Attorney’s office.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
