Although Edgar Berlanga enjoyed being on the fast track to superstardom, the 168 contender reached an impasse with Bob Arum and Top Rank. As a result, with both sides unable to solve their differences, Top Rank cut him loose, making the 25-year-old one of the most sought out free agents around.

Currently, all of the big hitters, including Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, have thrown wads of cash and tantalizing bouts in the Puerto Rican’s direction.

While the pernicious knockout puncher continues to mull over his options, Hearn, like his contemporaries, is hopeful that Berlanga will give him a call. Hearn’s offer is not only a financial one but more than anything, the longtime promoter is dangling the Canelo Alvarez carrot.

Having worked with the pound-for-pound luminary on countless occasions, Hearn is convinced that if Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) hands him the reins to his career, he’ll be able to lure Alvarez into the ring.

Ultimately, a showdown against Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) is one that Berlanga desires. And while the up-and-comer is fully aware that the Mexican superstar has loads of options, in his view, at least from a financial standpoint, no one else can bring what he does to the table.

“Out of all the fighters out there, a fight with me makes the most sense,” said Berlanga to BoxingScene.com when asked why Canelo Alvarez should face him. “Why? Because I sell.”

In totality, Berlanga has proven to be a draw, just on a smaller scale. In his latest trek to the ring, 4,347 fans filled the Hulu Theater in New York’s Madison Square Garden to witness him outpoint Roamer Alexis Angulo. One fight prior, a unanimous decision win over Steve Rolls, 5,158 fans filled the smaller arena.

Considering his track record, Berlanga believes that his star power is an overpowering one.

Alvarez, time and time again, has proven himself on the biggest of stages. Presently, the 32-year-old undisputed super middleweight champion could be on the verge of finalizing a homecoming bout against England’s John Ryder.

Berlanga, in the meanwhile, is focusing on his own development. Should Alvarez pick up the phone and give him a call, however, Berlanga believes that it would be a sagacious decision on his part.

“I’m a star man.”
