Thunder Fellows program welcomes first college-level cohort

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma City Thunder added five Black college students to its Thunder Fellows program.

This will be the program’s first college cohort and will include students from Tulsa Community College, Langston University, Oral Roberts University, and the University of Tulsa.

The students joining the program are Mary Harris, Lawrence King, Nadia Mooreland, Christian Ochei and Maryam Suleiman.

“We are excited to launch our first college cohort,” said Cedric Ikpo, Thunder Fellows executive director. “This marks a major milestone in our program goals and efforts to create a high school to college to career pipeline for Black students in Tulsa. Having college students within the program allows us to actively build out an internship model that extends beyond the academic year.”

The program offers a semester of curriculum targeted toward professional development to ensure students thrive in the career fields they seek to enter after school.

College students will also have the opportunity to participate in summer experiences within the Thunder organizations and other program partners.

The NBA Foundation announced the Thunder Fellows is one of 31 programs receiving grant funding.

“We’re grateful for the ongoing support from the NBA Foundation,” Ikpo said. “Through partners like the Foundation, CAA, Google, University of Tulsa and so many others, we’ve been able to expand the curriculum and opportunities for our students.”
