The Prichard Water Board is drowning in debt.
Financial documents obtained by NBC 15 show the water board is at risk of defaulting on its debt.
Monday a special board meeting was called...every seat in the house was full, except for the seats of the board chairman and two other board members. That means the meeting couldn't begin.
Citizens feel let down by the board leadership, and the three no-show board members are trying to take down and dissolve Prichard Water.
"We all know the game, and now the game is over, we are about to go into default and lose this utility," said Severia Morris, a PWW&S customer.
Documents dating back to December show the Prichard Water board made a partial payment on the November bill of more than 140,000 dollars, but they were still more than 115,000 dollars short of the scheduled payment.
"Doyle and myself...the question is where is the money from the paying customers, you all going, where is the money," said John Johnson, PWW&S board member.
Two board members Cherry Doyle and John Johnson called the "special meeting" after receiving the email notice from Synovus Bank on Friday and were the only 2 officials who showed up.
"The customers have questions, and they deserve answers from those that are in leadership. So, by them not showing up, it disrespected the customers as well as me and John Johnson," said Cherry Doyle, a PWW&S board member.
Both board members say they are out of the loop and trying to find answers for their customers.
"It does appear that it looks to be an intentional act because, at the November meeting, it was not shared, in any of the communication in December or this past month in January. So, it appears to be intentional and that is very disappointing, it's very heartless and unfair to the customers of Prichard and Chickasaw," said Johnson
I reached out to PWW&S attorney Jay Ross for comment on if bankruptcy is on the table for discussion, but his team would not speak on the matter.
With Prichard Water drowning in debt, customers feel they are paying the price.
"We fully depend on them to be transparent; we fully depend on them to be responsible in their duties as far as the money is concerned. It just seems like there was a dereliction of duty, there is no transparency and as a result, we are in the mess that we are in," said Carletta Davis, a PWW&S customer.
The board has until March 2nd to make their payment to avoid a default.
Doyle and Johnson plan to hold an "Emergency Meeting" Tuesday at 11 a.m. to hopefully get some answers.
