In the summer of 1890, when Edmonds was incorporating, the Schumacher brothers (William and Roy) finished erecting a building on what was then the corner of Fourth (Groceries) and George Street, to house their grocery business. Note: George Street was later renamed Main Street, and Fourth (Groceries) was replaced by new buildings. Fourth Street as we know it today was built further east in later years.

When we moved to Edmonds, one of the moving company employees taught us about “An Edmonds Kind of Day.” It was also March and one of the faux spring days we’ve been experiencing and at that time, it didn’t mean much since we were new to Edmonds and mostly knew about the gray days and socked-in waterfront. A little less than 20 years later, we get what they meant, even though I think it changes with time. The recent sunny weather has highlighted what makes the location beautiful, of course, but the abundance of my two current hyperfocuses — art and birds — and Edmonds being the state’s first Creative District and the home of Puget Sound Bird Fest is really driving it home.

Arnie Lund shared this photo of singer John McCutcheon performing at the Edmonds Center for the Arts Saturday, March 25. The artist, Lund said, “is one of the leading folk singers in the world today and has collaborated with John Prine, Tom Paxton and others. He writes most of the music he performs, he told stories and he played a variety of traditional instruments, including a lovely hammer dulcimer. During his nearly three-hour concert, he made the audience laugh and cry, and moved us.”

The City of Edmonds is seeking applicants to fill four positions on the Economic Development Commission (EDC), which will become available at the end of March. The Economic Development Commission is a nine-member, volunteer board appointed by the mayor and city council to provide advice and recommendations on economic vitality, jobs and enhancement of municipal revenue.

Oct 7, 1955 – Mar 9, 2023. Nancy passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Minneapolis, MN to Erik and Barbara Schultz. Nancy was raised in a very proud Norwegian family and passed along many of these traditions to her own family. Nancy cherished opportunities to host family and friends around life’s celebrations. Many enjoyed her gift of crafting delicious meals and desserts. In 1989, Nancy married Michael Schultz (same last names, not related…) and settled in Edmonds.

Firefighters rescued a man who swam to the island in the middle of Lake Ballinger after his sailboat capsized just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, South County Fire said. The man was cold, but not injured. He was evaluated by firefighters at the scene. Firefighters aboard the rescue boat stationed at the lake towed the sailboat to shore.
