Law Ranks Philadelphia Phillies Top Prospects in Latest List

Keith Law of The Athletic list out the top prospects in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system in his latest rankings ahead of the 2023 MLB season.

The Philadelphia Phillies have some exciting prospects in their farm system heading into the 2023 MLB season. For the most part, their pitching prospects are the true stars of the system as they boast some of the most electric arms in baseball.

The Athletic's Keith Law ranked the Phillies top-30 prospects in order ahead of MLB Spring Training. There really aren't many surprises and the usual suspects all made the cut in the top-five.

Here is how Law ranked them:

1. Andrew Painter, RHP

2. Mick Abel, RHP

3. Johan Rojas, OF

4. Hau Yu Lee, 2B/SS

5. Griff McGarry, RHP

Again, no surprises. Painter is the undisputed number one guy in the system and is a consensus top-15 prospect in all of baseball. In Law's eyes he comes in at #13.

"His delivery is good and he repeats it well, but we’ve seen way too many guys like him get hurt on their way to the majors to ignore the possibility here," writes Law. "If your crystal ball says he’ll stay healthy, he’s a top-10 prospect in baseball, and might have a case to be in the top 6."

Law's logic and subsequent ranking of Painter is, at a minimum confusing. He ranked Painter at #13 in his top-100 rankings, but said if he stays healthy he is a top-10 in baseball. Painter very well could make his MLB debut in 2023 and has no history of injury whatsoever.

So which is it?

Following Painter, the rest of the list makes sense. Abel is right up there in terms of talent. He has a good, repeatable delivery and should find success in the Big Leagues.

Overall, the ranking make perfect sense in relation to the top-5 players in the system. There could be some debate that McGarry should be valued just a little bit higher, but the flip side is his shaky command.

Either way, it's going to be a fun season down on Philadelphia's farm!
