CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A fundraiser for a Chesapeake sheriff's deputy who was injured during a shootout with a murder suspect in Hampton about a month ago garnered more than $11,000.

Winston's Raw Bar & Grill held a fundraiser for Chesapeake Sheriff's Deputy Scott Chambers. He was shot while trying to apprehend a murder suspect in Hampton on Jan. 11. He has since been released from the hospital.

The restaurant said all of the proceeds and donations from the comedy show and auction went directly to Deputy Chambers in his recovery.

For Chesapeake Sheriff Deputy Scott Chambers, he said he took a vow to protect and serve.

"I feel very blessed quite honestly, to me, this is what community is about," said Chambers. "My job was to stay alert, stay in the fight until I got to the hospital, and then trust that the surgeons, the nurses and everybody that was present to take care of me appropriately."

His colleagues call him a fighter.

"Scott isn't only a warrior, he's my hero," said Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O'Sullivan.

After a brush with death, Chambers said he still wants to be a part of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

"I mean, I don't know if I've ever given up at anything," he said. "If I'm able to contribute in a productive way, I want to be able to do that."

Chambers got an unexpected surprise when a couple said they would give him money to help pay his mortgage.

" I have a job to do, I'm so thankful for the community. I'm thankful for the support," said Chambers.

Chambers said he's ready to get back into the field but is taking it one step at a time per doctor's orders.

The mission at Winston's Bar and Grill was to raise more than $10,000.

A GoFundMe has also been set up to raise money for Deputy Chambers.
