After 5 On Your Side investigated a Hillsborough contractor, a state agency is trying to ban him from contracting in North Carolina, ever again.

Three people told 5 On Your Side they hired Scott Taylor of Shapes Construction for big remodeling projects. They say he collected tens of thousands of dollars, then abandoned the projects without completing work that was paid for.

Taylor was a member of the Hillsborough Planning Board. He was not licensed as a contractor in North Carolina.

In an email exchange with 5 On Your Side, Taylor claimed he was reviewing all options to make amends with the customers involved in what he called a "mess," but one customer tells 5 On Your Side she has received no compensation from Taylor in the months following our initial report.

Now, the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors says they’re suing to stop him from ever working as an unlicensed general contractor in the state. The board expects to file that suit in the next week and will have to wait for the case to be scheduled in Wake County Superior Court before an injunction could take effect. The board says they are aggressively pursuing the case.

5 On Your has also learned the Better Business Bureau has suspended Shapes Construction’s accreditation effective Feb. 3, 2023. The BBB says the decision to suspend Shapes was due to the company failing to adhere to the standards of BBB accreditation.

The BBB will reach out to Shapes several more times to try and resolve complaints against them. If that doesn’t work the BBB Board of Directors can terminate Shapes’ accreditation.

Taylor previously told 5 On Your Side that Shapes Construction would file for bankruptcy.
