The owner of Baltimore's Hiatus Cheesecake is taking his business to the next level.Matthew Featherstone, founder of Hiatus Cheesecake, added his homemade strawberry crumbles onto cakes while frosting others in preparation for a big batch of cheesecakes to go out to Baltimore-area Whole Foods stores. And, with 13 different varieties, there's something for everyone."We have Sweet Potato Cake Fantasy, it's one of our most popular," Featherstone said. "We also have strawberry bliss, which is a vanilla bean cheesecake. It has a ginger cream cheese frosting with Swiss buttercream and our house-made strawberry jam. We have a red velvet, which is a layered red velvet with red velvet cheesecake."Featherstone started his business in 2016 after working in the restaurant business for years. But it really all began when he was a child, watching and eating his mother's baked goods."When I was young, my mom and I used to bake bread pretty much every day," Featherstone said. "One day, my cousins came in with a cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. I tried it and fell in love with dessert instantly. I went and found one of her recipes in her cookbooks and made a cheesecake."In addition to selling his decadent desserts at Whole Foods stores, he has sold them on QVC, he did a crowdsourced funding campaign, which enabled him to buy a delivery truck, and he recently became one of only five businesses to win Kroger's Go Fresh and Local Supplier Accelerator, allowing him to work on a fourth quarter launch at Kroger stores nationally."It's certainly exciting, and we're really grateful to be able to have the opportunity to grow across the country," Featherstone said.All of the items are made with his homemade fresh ingredients, and each cake is around 500 calories."Hiatus is supposed to represent a temporary break from your diet, and the portion sizes are small, so you don't overindulge," Featherstone said.But after one bite, you'll see it's difficult not to overindulge, which is part of his secret to his success.
