Unless you haven’t been paying attention, hybrid cars are ubiquitous. Every time you get onto the freeway, you’re sure to see at least a handful of hybrid cars driving next to you. Nowadays, you’ll share the road with many more hybrids than the Toyota Prius too. As they say, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” And if you want to join those other hybrid drivers on the road, here are five of the cheapest ones in the market for 2023.
1. 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid — $28,355
We recently drove the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE Nightshade and were impressed with its quiet cabin and easy driving mechanics. It’s powered by a 2.5-liter engine that’s paired with an electric motor, which sends 208 hp to the front wheels via a CVT. Off the line, the Camry Hybrid provides smooth acceleration, and its electric power makes going up hills and getting onto the highway a snap.
During our time with it, we were able to get an average of 38 mpg in mixed driving situations, which is far lower than the EPA-estimated 44 city/47 highway mpg averages. However, it’s still great for the car’s price point and for a midsize sedan.
2. 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid — $28,250
The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offers buyers sleek styling, an attractive interior, and a few different engine options. Obviously, the most frugal option is the 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain that makes 192 hp. It can also achieve up to 45 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. That’s plenty of power and gas mileage for a car that only costs around $28,000.
3. 2022 Toyota Prius — $25,075
The 2023 Toyota Priuss just came out, but if you want to save a few dollars, you can still find new 2022 models on dealer lots. The 2022 Toyota Prius starts at $25,075 and carries on its tried-and-true lineage of having one of the best gas mileage ratings in the market. According to the EPA, the 2022 Prius can get up to 58 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway. That’s stellar, especially considering its low starting price.
4. 2023 Hyundai Elantra — $21,765
Buyers who want a hybrid car shaped more like a regular sedan could find some interest in the 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. It starts at around $21,000; however, that price can quickly reach the $30,000 mark when the top trim level is chosen. According to TrueCar, “the most popular style is the Hybrid Limited DCT, which starts at $30,265 and with a Hybrid 1.6-liter, inline-four engine, and front wheel drive.”
Buyers that want to spend less can easily do so by picking the lower trim levels, which come well-equipped and still average 50 mpg in combined driving.
5. 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid — $22,645
Another compact hybrid sedan option is the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. The Corolla offers buyers plenty of value in a small package with plenty of room for five adults. Of course, the main draw to this car is its 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain that delivers an average of 50 mpg, in addition to its array of safety features. If you’re looking for a really cheap hybrid that’s big on value, the Toyota Corolla is the one to get.
