Texans draft Texas Tech DE Tyree Wilson in Browns Wire top-42 mock

The Houston Texans are more than likely going with a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick in Round 1 of the 2023 NFL draft.

The only mystery is who they will select, and that answer is further clouded due to the Chicago Bears possessing the No. 1 pick and being open to dealing it to another quarterback-needy team that wants to jump the Texans.

No. 12 overall is a bigger mystery for Houston. The extra pick — obtained via 2022 offseason trade with the Cleveland Browns — gives the Texans a chance to either bolster their receiving corps or elevate their pass coverage. Taking a quality defensive lineman is general out of the question.

However, according to Cory Kinnan from the Browns Wire, who released a “top-42” mock draft, the Texans use the extra first-rounder to take Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson.

Wilson generated 61 combined tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in his 10 games with Texas Tech.

Houston could use that type of impact off the edge, and new coach DeMeco Ryans would have an idea on how to maximize the potential from Wilson. The pick would also allow the Texans to have a promising duo off the edge with Wilson and defensive end Jonathan Greenard, who is entering the final year of his contract.
