Lorain County Sheriff’s Office earns ‘gold’ for training excellence

Capt. Richard Bosley of the Lorain County Sheriff's Office announces that the department has received an award of excellence.

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio -- The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized for excellence in policy management and training.

The recognition for 2022 is from the Lexipol Connect Program, which began about 20 years ago in California and is growing nationwide. It is “the nation’s leading provider of policy, training and wellness support for first responders and public servants,” according to a news release.

The program tracks performance on five systems that measure success in policy management, said Capt. Richard Bosley of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

Tony Syrowski, a retired sergeant and project specialist, has been named the sheriff’s office Lexipol manager.

Bosley said they are proud that the office has achieved “Gold” recognition for “consistent and effective policy dissemination to personnel, timely policy updates as laws change and officer training on policies.”

The program also offers silver and bronze levels, which let a sheriff know that they need to see that the staff becomes more diligent on policies.

“But the little bit of time spent doing this pays dividends in understanding and applying policies,” Bosley said of achieving Gold level recognition.

He also said the policy content can be customized for each sheriff’s office or for police departments.

“The process keeps our policies up to date and fresh,” he said.

Bosley said the sheriff’s office provides daily training bulletins.

“And every month, Lexipol comes to everyone’s email,” he said, “about 85 deputies. The bulletin will send the policy on child abuse investigations, for example, and after reading it, they get some questions. And everyone has to acknowledge by email that they received the information and took the exam.”

During 2022, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office issued more than 200 daily training bulletins to deputies, Bosley said.
