Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - I'm sure that this won't come as much of a surprise to you, but this has been a historically slow snow season for Rochester. Through February 5th the National Weather Service (NWS) in Rochester has only recorded 21.2" of snow. This snow amount is more than 40" below normal. Through this point this is the 5th least snowy winter in Rochester since 1926.
The period from the early 1930s through the 1940s featured Winter weather that wasn't very snowy for Rochester. The top-4 least snowy winters are all from that era. For reference, last winter had 61.5" of snow to date.
You may be wondering if we have any substantial snow in the forecast this week for Western New York. The short answer to that question is no. The weather pattern will be far too mild for any appreciable snow. A storm system will produce a few light rain showers Tuesday afternoon with a light rain also possible into Thursday.
The air will turn cold enough for a chance of snow later Friday night into Saturday. At this point it doesn't look like any substantial snow will fall over the next 7 days. The extended forecast will warm up even more next week. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is suggesting temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees above normal next week.
If you don't like winter cold and snow then this has been the season for you and if you do like snow we'll keep posted on any changes down the road.
