Speculation has run rampant already about the future of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the NFL offseason hasn’t even begun yet. Should Aaron Rodgers opt to continue his career, it sounds like there is a chance that it continues with another franchise.
Making a trade centered around Aaron Rodgers could be very complex. His contract is enormous, which limits just how many teams can actually make a deal for him as his cap hit is nearly $60 million for the 2023 season. Not only would a team have to pay him a lot of money, but the Packers also aren’t going to just give him away. A lot of draft capital will be required to land the four-time MVP.
Alas, given his track record, there are certainly teams that would make a run at him should he be made available. One of those teams could very well be the Las Vegas Raiders, who are moving on from Derek Carr this offseason.
The Raiders would make for an intriguing landing spot for Aaron Rodgers as this offense is ready-made for a quarterback to produce. He would be reunited with Davante Adams, which is a major selling point. In a tandem with the Packers, they created some magic together. If Las Vegas were able to re-sign running back Josh Jacobs in free agency, they would be in business.
To land Aaron Rodgers in a trade, multiple high-end draft picks would be required. An educated guess on what it could cost was two first-round picks in exchange for the future Hall of Famer. While negotiations could eventually land on that, the Raiders could start their offer a little lower and work up toward two first-rounders.
The No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft is a premium asset and will assuredly be included in the deal. That, along with the Raiders’ second-round pick and the extra fifth-round pick they received from the Atlanta Falcons in an offseason trade could be enough to get the Packers to the negotiating table.
To get closer to the reported asking price, the Raiders could offer a conditional second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. If the Raiders and Aaron Rodgers reach certain incentives during the 2023 season, it will turn into a first-round pick. If those aren’t reached, the Packers haul would end up being one first-rounder and two seconds.
An offer like that provides Las Vegas a little insurance in case things don’t pan out with Aaron Rodgers and they need to jump back into the quarterback market in 2024. The Packers get some excellent value for their star and the Jordan Love era begins in Green Bay.
