Rural Illinois couple dead in Hancock County ice fishing accident

Hancock County, Ill.-  The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says an apparent ice fishing accident resulted in the death of two people in rural Hancock County.

According to a news release, at about 3:44 PM Saturday, February 4th, the Hancock County 911 Center received a call reporting two people in the water from an ice fishing accident at a rural farm pond near Durham, Illinois.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and, within minutes, both individuals were rescued from the water, and life-saving measures were started.

Both individuals were taken to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington and Life-saving measures were attempted for several hours.  At about 10 PM Saturday, Hancock County officials spoke with authorities in Des Moines County and learned the two had passed away.

The two individuals were identified as 52-year-old Sean D. Chaney and 50-year-old Dawn Chaney of rural LaHarpe, Illinois.

The family of the Chaney’s has been contacted and notified, and a full investigation into the incident is underway.
