Editor’s note: Colorado 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael J. Allen’s office announced in an Aug. 25, 2023, decision letter that the officers who fired their weapons during this incident were justified because they reasonably believed their lives and the lives of others were in danger when he raised a shotgun toward the officers. Sgt. Aaron Lloyd, Officer Steven Nelson and Officer Stewart Smythe will not face any charges in the death of the man, identified in the decision letter as Evan Kendrick Wollert.

A man died early Monday morning after Colorado Springs police shot and killed him when he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

A resident in an apartment in the 3900 block of East Bijou Street called 911 about 1:20 a.m. to report a man outside her apartment knocking on her door and window; she also reported the man was armed with a gun, according to a Colorado Springs Police Department Twitter thread.

About 13 minutes later, Colorado Springs police officers arrived and contacted the man. Police said the man was still armed.

“Multiple commands were given to the suspect to drop the weapon,” police stated on Twitter. “The suspect pointed the firearm at officers and at least one officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect.”

The man died at the scene after officers and medical personnel attempted medical aid, according to the Twitter thread. No one else was injured.

Three officers, who have not been identified, were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Colorado Springs police did not respond to an initial request for comment.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is handling investigative updates, police said.
