MOUNT PLEASANT, Sc. (WGXA) - A Macon teen is seriously hurt following a vehicle fire on the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina.
According to a police report obtained by WGXA News, the incident happened Friday night just after 11:30 p.m.
According to statements from responding officers, and 911 calls, a car was on fire on the Ravenel Bridge. When the officer made it to the scene, he discovered three men sitting on the side of the bridge. All three of the men had differing severity of burns due to the car they were in having caught fire.
Officers said the car was seen on the bridge traveling at an excessive speed, estimated to be 90 to 100 miles per hour. When the car reached the top of the bridge, it caught fire and traveled nearly another mile before coming to a stop. That's when all three men inside got out and moved to the side of the bridge. None of the men inside were able to explain why the car caught fire, only noting they had smelled a burning smell while driving on the bridge.
Officers say the driver, later identified as 20-year-old William Welch, of Easley, South Carolina, had been, and later admitted to, drinking.
One of the men in the car, later identified as 19-year-old Thomas Johnson, is from Macon. According to the report, Johnson was badly burned in the fire. The report indicates Johnson has third-degree burns on over 45 percent of his body, stating his injuries would have, "a life-changing impact."
A third man in the car told police they had been at a friend's apartment drinking, but he had not seen Welch drinking and felt it was ok for him to drive.
A warrant has been issued for Welch's arrest following his discharge from the hospital. Welch faces a Felony DUI charge for great bodily injury.
