A man found driving a missing Lyft driver's car from Palm Beach Gardens is being held on a $2 million cash bond in North Carolina.
Matthew Scott Flores, 35, appeared in a Rutherford County courtroom on Friday morning. He is wanted on a warrant for a murder in Hardee County, Florida, last month.
While in court, Flores asked the judge whether he could leave jail if he paid the $2 million bond. The judge amended the bond to be $2 million in cash.
Authorities in North Carolina captured Flores following a high-speed chase in the western part of the state on Thursday night after receiving an alert that he may be in the area.
The car he wrecked, a red 2022 Kia Stinger, belongs to 74-year-old Gary Levin, of Palm Beach Gardens.
Levin's family reported him missing on Tuesday. Lyft told WPEC Levin picked up his last fare in Delray Beach with a scheduled drop off in Okeechobee on Monday afternoon. His cellphone last pinged in Okeechobee near NW Park Street and Parrott Avenue before going dark. His car was last spotted in Gainesville.
Levin is still missing but authorities said human remains were found Saturday around 10 a.m. in a wooded area about two miles from where Levin's phone last pinged.
The remains have not been identified.
"If we can get some closure for somebody, we're going to do that just as quick as we possibly can bring those that are responsible for this death to justice as quickly as we can," authorities said.
Flores faces a second-degree murder charge for the killing of Jose Carlos Martinez on Jan. 24, in the city of Wauchula.
Police also arrested and charged Stephanie Velgara with being an accessory after the fact in the murder. Authorities said she helped Flores flee law enforcement.
Flores has a number of arrests and convictions in Hardee and DeSoto Counties that date back to 2010 for grand theft auto, fleeing police, larceny, dealing in stolen property, and driving with a suspended or revoked license among other crimes.
He is due back in court in North Carolina on February 22.
