City planning the focus of the next Rotary Club of Carson City Meeting

City planners often make controversial decisions regarding our community’s land use. Rotary Club of Carson City members will learn how those decisions are made when Carson City Community Development Director Hope Sullivan joins the club meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The lunch meeting takes place at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. Sullivan will take the Rotarians through "Planning 101" a crash course on planning terminology and processes in Carson City. The public is invited to attend.

“Land use planning decisions are often controversial, and we will discuss the criteria that the City applies in making decisions,” she said. “Members will be able to get involved as part of ‘Who wants to be the Planner?’.  I will give them real scenarios that I have encountered and see how, once they understand how to apply the decision-making criteria, they would have handled things.”

In her role with the city Sullivan supervises the City’s land use planning, building, code enforcement, business license and redevelopment functions. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania and a Masters in Regional Planning with a concentration in land use management from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Sullivan has joined the city in 2016 as Planning Manager. She was promoted to her current position in 2021.
