The Twilight Saga films were, from the second film onwards, sold on the rivalry between the two male leads, with 'Team Edward' and 'Team Jacob' being plastered on every piece of merch you think of, not to mention countless accounts on social media.

The rivalry, which in the films was over the romantic affection of Kristen Stewart's Bella Swan, was such a big part of the conversation that Jacob actor Taylor Lautner admitted that it did get to him on a personal level.

Speaking on The Toast podcast, he said it was "very strange... being in different cities and having thousands of screaming fans either take your side or the other guy's side".

"I was so young. I was 16 when Twilight came out, 17 for New Moon and Eclipse. I finished the franchise by the time I was 19," Lautner added.

He also explained that both himself and Edward actor Robert Pattinson didn't have any rivalry in real life, and wished that people would focus on other aspects of the films instead.

"Like, we're a team," he continued. "We're both just trying to make the best movies. But it was a little bizarre, the competitiveness. There wasn't a competitiveness between me and Rob, but having that constant reminder, it definitely had an impact."

Lautner revealed that he actually watched some of the Twilight films while bored in a hotel room last year, and said he now perhaps understands why Bella went with Edward over Jacob in the end.

"As I was watching it, I was like, 'I kind of get it. Jacob's a little annoying'. Like, I love Jacob and his heart, but he's a little annoying," he explained.

Lautner has previously spoken about the anxiety that the fame of the series brought, admitting that he didn't set foot in a cinema or a shopping centre for about a decade.

The Twilight Saga is currently available to stream now via Sky Go and NOW.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.
