Four men were arrested Sunday morning in Holmdel after they tried to break into a garage. Quick work by the homeowner and police officers in two towns stopped these would-be car thieves in their tracks.

According to Middletown Mayor Tony Perry, the four men tried a different tactic in their attempt to steal cars Sunday morning - they rented their getaway car off an app known as Turo.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday at a home on the Kimball Turn cul-de-sac. Officials say the homeowner noticed four men wearing dark clothes, ski masks and gloves trying to get into the garage. According to police, once the homeowner made his presence known to the men, the four ran into a waiting Mercedes E-Class.

A Holmdel officer and Middletown K-9 unit quickly caught up to the suspects, and the dog helped prevent what would have been a foot chase. Police say black gloves, black ski masks and additional items which are believed to be stolen were also found in the car.

Police arrested 27-year-old Zarif Harden, of Plainfield, and the three underage suspects were released to their parents or guardians.

Authorities believe the four suspects were in the Holmdel area two to three hours before their arrest. It is not known what type of vehicle they were after.
