A local family is heartbroken and calling for a change after their loved one was shot and killed Friday night.
The victim, 20-year-old Zycorreyan Harris was killed in Semmes after his family says he was trying to get his baby from his child's mother.
The family is asking for justice and calling for stricter gun control measures, adding that there needs to be an end to the cycle of gun violence that has affected so many families across our area.
"My son Zycorreyan Brown Harris was murdered for only trying to be a good father," cried Porshina Redd Harris, Zycorreyan Harris's mother," Hes not a thug, he's not one of those boys running around with his pants off his butt, or with a gun. This was a young man who was headed for greatness, he was trying to get into college."
Mobile County Sheriff's Office and Semmes Police Department responded to the shooting Friday night.
Officers say it occurred at the K&J Beauty Supply store on Moffet Road, and that it began as an argument between Zycorreyan Harris and 21-year-old Daniel Holloway Jr.
Police say Holloway shot Harris; Harris then fled to the parking lot where he later died after witnesses tried conducting CPR to save his life.
Police say Holloway left the crime scene, but then later returned. He was then taken into custody and charged with murder.
Harris's mother Porshina Redd Harris is now speaking out, saying her son was taken from them far to soon.
"He was looking forward to teaching you (Zycorreyan Harris's son Zy 'Mari) how to dribble, he was looking forward to taking his baby to his first basketball or football game, he was looking forward to this and yall snatched this away. Not just from him but me"
Harris leaves behind his 7-month-old son Zy 'Mari. His family says he was good man, great father, and a basketball star.
"To have to go on without my brother it is not fair," said Brutravious Smith, Harris's brother, "He looks just like him, like you said its just crazy that we have to tell im what his daddy was and not what his daddy is."
The family is using their grief to bring attention to the issue of gun violence and is pleading for a change.
"It's justice for "Zy" right now, justice for all of these babies, especially this one. This is a good kid; this is not a bad kid. We need to change the gun laws, this is what yall are doing...Yall are setting these babies up to kill each other," cried Harris's mother.
The family says they plan to hold a vigil this month.
