Callaway Students to Sponsor Blood Drive Later This Month

CALLAWAY – Callaway has established a bit of a reputation for the frequency and fruitfulness of its blood drives, and now the students of Callaway Public Schools are looking to carry on that tradition.

As part of the American Red Cross’ Future Blood Donor program, students within the district are learning about the importance of blood donation and are encouraging community members, both theirs and those nearby, to give blood at the school’s end-of-month drive.

Though the students might not be old enough to donate blood themselves, they will be doing their part through recruitment efforts. Students will be recruiting parents, family members, and other adults capable of donating throughout the month.

The Red Cross’ Future Blood Donor program teaches elementary and middle school students not only about the importance and benefits of blood donation but about the function of blood in the body as well. Every student who successfully recruits a donor will receive special recognition from the Red Cross for doing so.

Individuals 17 years of age and older weighing over 110 pounds and consider themselves in generally good health are eligible to donate blood, according to the Red Cross, and a donor’s card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. High school students may have to meet additional requirements to donate.

The Callaway Public School’s student-sponsored blood drive will take place on February 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the school.
