That bill was introduced by Omaha Senator Mike McDonnell. And if passed, could provide Union Omaha with up to $50 million.

The president of the professional team says this is about more than soccer. It would be an investment for the entire community.

Playing at Werner Park, home to the Storm Chasers, has been great for Union Omaha President Martie Cordaro says.

But they've always wanted a stadium of their own.

"It would be different because this would be soccer specific. You know, we're playing in a baseball stadium," said Cordaro.

Their goal is for that to change in the coming years, with a 10,000 capacity, $100 million stadium where they would hope to start a women's program, youth academy and community events.

"You know, we're proposing 100, 250 special events would be each year outside of women's soccer and outside of men's soccer," said Cordaro.

Cordaro says they're hoping to score a spot north of downtown after a feasibility study showed them that's the place to be.

And they hope a stadium would keep young people from going out of state.

"It's a younger demo sport. You know, we need to work to keep our young talent here. And we need to have things that will attract young talent here to the state from an economic perspective and a job hiring prospective," said Cordaro.

Omaha Senator Mike McDonnell agrees.

"We've got to start thinking bigger," said Sen. McDonnell.

He's the one who introduced the bill.

He says Union Omaha would have to raise $25 million to begin with and get the support of the city and mayor.

The club would then have to apply for the grant through the department of economic development, where they could receive up to $50 million from the state's cash reserve fund.

"We are talking about one time spends in our cash reserve, basically our rainy day fund, we can afford this," said Sen. McDonnell.

Sen. McDonnell says he believes this is the perfect time to invest in the sport.

"It's a very popular sport with younger people not only in the United States but throughout the world. And we should embrace it and give them a chance to have their own stadium now," said Sen. McDonnell.
