Crazy Rich Asians star Harry Shum Jr has provided an update on the spin-off film.
The actor, who played Charlie Wu in the 2018 rom-com, is due to star in the upcoming film, which will focus on his relationship with Gemma Chan's Astrid Leong following their intimate eye contact in the mid-credits scene.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, the actor revealed that the spin-off’s script is currently being written, meaning he doesn’t know when it will be released.
“A lot of people are really excited, especially with the wonderful work that the team behind Crazy Rich Asians has been doing,” he said. “I think at this point they’re writing it and trying to just get it right. So as far as I know now, I don’t know any concrete date of when it would go, but I’m just as excited as the audience to get this going.”
In addition to the currently untitled spin-off, two sequels to the first film are in the works, continuing the story of Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding). The follow-ups will be based on Kevin Kwan’s novels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems.

Golding previously outlined the reasons behind the delay for the two sequels, telling Digital Spy: “They've got the two books that Kevin Kwan wrote still to come and they're trying to find an angle to convert those from page to script to film.
“It's a very complicated process because, visually, sometimes a novel doesn't make as much sense as it would on the screen in a direct adaptation; you have to really change it up to make it interesting.
“The other issue is that we've got the first one to compete with – everybody has a very high expectation. It's not going to be as easy as the first one.”
