The Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating complaints of smoke and a strong order from the Norlite incineration facility in Cohoes Sunday.
At 7:45 a.m., DEC immediately responded to a complaint of a strong odor coming from the Norlite facility in Cohoes.
DEC’s Spill Responders confirmed burning odors to the north of the facility and observed smoke from one of the stacks at the kiln being blown towards the impacted area. DEC inspected the facility for a source of the odors and determined odors were coming from a stack on one of the kilns and the kiln was shut down. The cause for the odors is still being investigated.
No hazardous materials or waste were being processed in the kiln at the time of the odor issues.
DEC and Norlite are continuing to investigate the source of the odors and DEC will further assess potential violations of State Environmental Conservation Law.
