Several activist groups spent three hours at the Jefferson County Jail over the weekend to help eligible inmates register to vote. At least 60 people were registered to vote Saturday during the event.
The Campaign Legal Center's Restore Your Vote team joined other organizations including Faith in Action Alabama, Greater Birmingham Ministries, League of Women Voters Birmingham, Alabama Black Women's Roundtable, and the Alabama Justice Initiative.
The CLC said two out of every three people currently in U.S. jails, or roughly half a million people, are being held in jail while they await their trial. Those inmates have not been convicted of a crime, so there would be no restrictions on their right to vote.
The organization has a "Restore Your Vote" tool which allows people in Alabama to check whether or not they are eligible to vote.
