CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cartwheels, flips, and handstands were just some of the moves kids showed off at Tuley Park on Chicago's South Side Saturday.

They were there to try out for the famed Jesse White Tumblers.  About 120 children auditioned, with dozens making the cut, according to the Sun-Times.

It was one of the first in-person recruitment events the group has done — not including performances — since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The program, which has brought in nearly 20,000 children since it was founded by recently retired Secretary of State Jesse White in 1959, and it allows children as young as 6 to try and make the team.

In an interview with WBBM in September 2022, White said the only requests they make of team members are to stay away from gangs, drugs and alcohol while maintaining a C average in school.

Even though White called it a career with the secretary of state’s office, he said he’ll be with the Tumblers “as long as there’s life within me.”
