THE BRONX (PIX11) — Police shot an armed man in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Four officers fired their weapons, striking the man multiple times near East 153rd Street and Grand Concourse, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said. The man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

The man allegedly assaulted a woman, 63, around 2 p.m. She then told uniformed officers at the Mott Haven Campus School that she’d been assaulted, Chell said.

Five officers chased after the man, who refused orders to stop, police said. He allegedly pulled out a gun, pointed it at a passerby, and ignored repeated police commands to drop it.

“He puts the weapon to his head and then rapidly turns on our officers,” Chell said. “Our officers discharged their firearms, striking the individual.”

Police helped the man after he was struck, Chell said. He was later taken to a hospital.

The woman who’d flagged the man to police was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police recovered a gun from the scene. They asked people to avoid the area. The NYPD advised there would be delays and emergency vehicles in the surrounding area.

The shooting comes the day after an off-duty officer was shot in Brooklyn.
