A man is in custody after he told Rio Rancho police he shot and killed a woman Sunday morning.
A spokesperson with the Rio Rancho Police Department said a call came in around 4 a.m. saying a man went to a residence claiming that he had shot someone.
Officers made contact with the man identified as Matthew Chavez, 23, and he agreed to meet police at the Premiere 14 movie theater, located at Southern Blvd. and Premiere Parkway.
Once Chavez arrived at the movie theater, he surrendered peacefully. Officers found a woman dead in the backseat with a gunshot wound.
She was identified as 21-year-old Jordan Gallegos and pronounced dead at the scene.
Chavez surrendered peacefully at the movie theater following a phone call with his mother. She advised Chavez to turn himself into authorities.
