According to PBOT, one of the most dangerous streets in Portland is SE Division Street.
Back in September of last year, PBOT wrapped up the Outer Division Safety Project.
Now, almost five months later, KATU asked what results they're seeing from the project.
PBOT said, "We are still collecting data on division so I don't have much to share at this time."
The project added pedestrian cross lanes and traffic lights. Some residents tell KATU they like the additions and think it makes the street safer.
But the one change that's causing concern is the raised medians.
"It gives economic losses to all of the businesses that are on division street," said Fatima Magomadova back in September 2022.
She has been vocal about this topic for months. She said they're seeing car accidents like this one that happened recently, "Thank God the driver is safe and she's alive. But this is very dangerous and we don't even know why. There is this piece of concrete in the middle of the road," Magomadova said.
PBOT said that the median is there for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
KATU asked if there are any more efforts to let people know that Division Street has changed.
PBOT responded by saying:
"Infrastructure is rarely the cause of crashes, more often it is the result of speeding, impairment, or distracted driving."
In a city council meeting in January, this video was shown to council members.
In response, commissioner Mingus Mapps, who is now in charge of PBOT, said this, "Many of the issues brought up today have been floating around for a while. I pledge to you that I will engage with them and I will engage with you around these issues. It will take a little bit of time though. I'm deeply committed in to building infrastructure which is robust and equitable. You should expect announcements from my office in the coming weeks and days."
