2 dead, 2 injured after crash on Alcoa Highway

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, according to a spokesperson with the City of Alcoa.

ALCOA, Tenn. — Two people died and two others were injured after two vehicles crashed on Alcoa Highway, according to a spokesperson with the city of Alcoa.

The Alcoa Police Department and the Alcoa Fire Department responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash with serious injuries at 12:45 p.m. on Alcoa Highway and Lakemont Road on Sunday.

An investigation by APD and the Tennessee Highway Patrol showed two people in a white Tesla sedan were traveling north at a high speed on Alcoa Highway, according to the city.

The car's driver lost control of the vehicle, crossed a grass median and hit an SUV traveling south with two people, the city said. The car broke in half and went off the road after it hit the SUV.

The city said the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to the University of Tennesee Medical Center where they later died from their injuries.

They were identified as Frank Winkler, 81, from Knoxville and Nancy Winkler, 82, from Knoxville.

The people in the SUV were taken to UTMC with serious injuries. Their conditions are "currently stable," according to the city. Authorities are not identifying anyone involved yet.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Alcoa Highway were shut down for several hours as crews responded.
