The off-duty NYPD officer who was shot in an armed robbery in Brooklyn Saturday night is from Deer Park, a News 12 Long Island source has confirmed.
Police say the off-duty officer arranged on social media to meet up with the seller of a car on Ruby Street in East New York.
He and a relative showed up and attempted to purchase the car. That's when he was shot by the seller, who pulled out a gun and tried to rob him.
Authorities say the officer was shot in the head and is in the hospital in critical condition. According to the NYPD, the officer is a five-year veteran of the force who works patrol.
Deer Park residents who did not know the officer said Sunday they were still in shock.
"There are no words. There are no words. I just feel so bad for his family," said Karen Savino. "I pray that he comes through."
"Definitely praying that God sends healing on him, to him and his family," said neighbor Stephanie Jean.
"I know this is a very close-knit community. The church I go to, you see a lot of police officers," said Greg Cronen.
A congregation at the Islamic Center of Deer Park prayed for the NYPD officer on Sunday.
Abdul Razzaq Aziz, the imam at the center, said the officer was not a member of the congregation, but he was of Muslim faith and lives in Deer Park.
"We pray for them, my God save them from any kind of calamity," Aziz said.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell visited the officer in the hospital and said they will stop at nothing to find the person responsible.
New York City Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch was also at the hospital and urged lawmakers to provide help to protect police.
On Twitter, the Pakistani American Law Enforcement Society asked everyone to pray for the officer who is assigned to the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn.
According to Adams’ office, the officer is married with children.
Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
