Marijuana sales in New Mexico shattering expectations

HOW BIG OF A DEAL THIS ACTUALLY IS. YOU KNOW, I THINK JUST LAST JANUARY, INCLUDING MEDICAL, THERE WAS. $43 MILLION IN TOTAL SALES. IT’S A TREND THE STATE HAS BEEN SEEING SINCE APRIL. AND LOCAL DISPENSARIES ARE NOTICING THE IMPACT OF MARIJUANA IS HAVING ON NEW MEXICO. OUR MARKET HAS BEEN, YOU KNOW, INCREDIBLY VOLATILE EVER SINCE. YOU KNOW, APRIL 1ST, WHEN WHEN THE PROGRAM INITIATED RECREATIONAL CANNABIS SALES, DAVID WHITE, PRESIDENT OF ORGANICA, A DISPENSARY IN ALBUQUERQUE, SAYS IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE IN NEW MEXICO AND BECAUSE OF IT. SINCE LAST APRIL, OVER $230 MILLION IN MARIJUANA SALES HAS BEEN RECORDED. EXPERTS BELIEVE THIS BUSINESS IS MORE BOOMING THAN PEOPLE REALIZE. IT’S HAPPENING IN A MORE LEGAL WAY. SO THE TAXES, THE TAX, THE STATES BENEFITING FROM THAT, THE CONSUMPTION. NOW, SCOTT PRISCO, CEO OF BISCOTTI, A MARIJUANA DELIVERY SERVICE, BELIEVES IT’S BEEN MORE THAN BENEFICIAL FOR THE ECONOMY, ESPECIALLY AT THE STATE LEVEL. WITH SO MANY DISPENSARIES TO CHOOSE FROM. WHITE SAYS HE WANTS TO MAKE SURE THE INDUSTRY DOES NOT GET TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. WE’RE IN A VERY COMPETITIVE MARKET NOW WHERE BEFORE THERE WAS ONLY, YOU KNOW, 35 LICENSED PRODUCERS, LOCAL STORE OWNERS SAY THE STATE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS IF IT WASN’T FOR THE LOCAL POPULATION PUSHING THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY FORWARD. IT’S ALL THE LOCALS GENERALLY EATING ALL THIS MONEY. SO THAT’S A HUGE THING FOR NEW MEXICO AND ALBUQUERQUE. IN THE END, THEY HOPE THE MONEY CAN ALSO BE USED IN WAYS TO MOVE NEW MEXICO FORWARD. THINK WOULD BE REALLY GREAT IF WE COULD PUT SOME OF THAT MONEY TOWARDS THE KIDS AND OUR FUTURE.

He believes it's been more than beneficial for the economy, especially at the state level. It's a trend the state has been seeing since April, and local dispensaries are realizing the impact marijuana is having on New Mexico. “Our market has been incredibly volatile ever since April 1 when the program initiated recreational cannabis sales,” said David White, president of Organtica in Albuquerque.
