Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy decides on ex-Jets coach as right-hand man to help him save his job

Next season is likely Mike McCarthy’s last shot at keeping his job as the Dallas Cowboys head coach, which likely is why he will call the plays. And to the extent that McCarthy will accept help in his Hail Mary bid, he’ll get it from an ex-Jets offensive coordinator.

Brian Schottenheimer will replace Kellen Moore, who left to become the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator after being kicked to the curb by the Cowboys. Moore trades interception-prone Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for Chargers passer Justin Herbert.

Moore’s departure came a few days after the Cowboys announced six assistant coaches on expiring contracts wouldn’t return and that they’d search for an offensive coordinator.

“I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team,” McCarthy said. “He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go.”

Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, was the Cowboys’ offensive consultant in 2022-23. Before that, he was the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator under failed head coach Urban Meyer.

Schottenheimer previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Jets (2006–2011), St. Louis Rams (2012–2014), University of Georgia (2015) and Seattle Seahawks (2018–2020).

“Brian has an exceptionally strong foundation, history and relationships beyond his time here that translate very well into understanding what our approach to operating and executing will be for the future,” McCarthy said. “This will be an exciting and efficient transition for us that I am confident will help yield the growth and results we all want and expect.”
