A 74-year-old woman is still missing after two mushroom hunters got lost in the French Hill area of Gasquet Friday. According to the Lost Coast Outpost who has a full story here, the woman’s daughter was located but the woman is still out in the cold and the wet.

The US Coast Guard posted at 10:23 p.m. Saturday:

This morning watchstanders in the Sector Humboldt Bay command center received a request from the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office to help search for two hikers missing since Friday night in the vicinity of Gasquet, CA. An MH-65 helicopter was launched to assist.

During the search, the aircrew located one of the hikers in a remote area and was able to hoist her to safety. She was taken to Del Norte County Regional Airport and transferred to EMS for treatment of hypothermia.

That aircrew and a follow-on crew completed two additional sorties supporting the ground search efforts, but have been unable to locate the remaining hiker, and DNCSO has suspended search efforts for the night.

Anyone with any sightings, information, or questions may contact the Sheriff’s Office at 707-464-4191.

God this woman needs your help tonight. You know exactly where she’s at. Please be with her wherever she’s at, please set Angels around her Lord, help her to cry out to you Jesus! Please please help her to be found . Please SAVE her soul. I’m asking for a MIRACLE tonight.
In Jesus name Amen.

With God all things are possible

Please comfort her daughter/ family tonight Lord and please help momma to be strong. Keep her safe.

My own momma is almost this age and this would be MY prayer for MY own momma. So I’m praying it for your momma this early morning.

Let people express compassion and faith without ripping them. Freedom of religion is one of our primary freedoms under the First Amendment.
Not everyone can help with a search, but anyone can pray. And I don’t see the harm.

Then when you take a break from praying, pack a headlamp, roll of flagging tape and a space blanket. Maybe some dryer lint and pitchy bits, an a lighter. Always look up up and around, and back in the direction you came. It’s good to make a point of checking your tracks. Break branches, and stack rocks.

That is good advice. Survival items don’t cost much, and they pack pretty compact too.
Tube/blanket emergency shelter ($10), Esbit cubes/stove ($15), stormproof matches ($4), a couple of snack bars ($3), and a bottle of water ($1) will keep you alive and healthy for a couple days. Should probably add a whistle ($1).
Reason for a whistle. About 40 years ago we had a forester that slid down into a hole in the forest and twisted his knee, and couldn’t get out of the hole.
He yelled and yelled, till his voice gave out. Next day there was an army of people out there looking for him, he could hear the searchers walking around in the woods, but with his throat crackling dry, he couldn’t yell back.
Finally somebody found him. From that day on, the foresters carried some survival items with them… including a whistle.
Esbit stove/cubes are tiny and light. (image)

I wish I could pack the baby in a front pack and drive 175 miles with the other kid on a leash to come search.
I don’t know this woman but she’s been on my heart since 3:00 a.m. to the point of tears.
When we have the love of Jesus in our hearts we can’t help caring for total strangers.
It doesn’t make sense to drag the kids out to a forest just to become victims ourselves and need more rescue services. So I will leave that to the able bodied professionals.
My heart aches for her and her family. And they are still… in my prayers.

This region is easy to get seperated. I carry a whistle when I go deep.

It’s easy to get lost when you are looking for mushrooms. So much so that I bought a case of road flares and handed one out to the girls I knew.
The flare won’t keep you warm but you can start a fire even if the woods are damp.

Oddly… I’ve found that flares usually don’t work that good at starting a fire.
Had a buddy that thought flares would be great for starting a fire in the winter.
Over various wintertime trips, we went through about half a dozen flares. Well, they sure worked fine at providing a light… but then they would go out… with no fire.
At that point, I would usually siphon some diesel out of the truck, light a little bit of newspaper and start a fire.

That’s good idea. I often pack small cut pieces of old bicycle tire. Gotta light it sure but fires up easy, burns hot, even when wet.

Melted candle wax with dryer lint makes handy, effective fire starters too.

It can get very disorienting when clouds come in and you lose your sun. The huckbrush can get you stuck also. That’s usually where the big hedgehogs like to hide! Man what a scary experience, wishing for a good outcome.

I get glow sticks of all sizes from dollar store and keep some in my packs&go bags.
They make some larger ones now that produce a deccent glow that can be seen from a distance, especially if thrown in the air over and over even in the rain.
Usually has a non natural light color that tends to catch the eye.
It was a thing we used to do at festivals to find each other at nite, honestly, twirling the thin glow sticks over our heads.

Really hoping this woman is found soon! 🤞
Its so hard to hear anything near all the rushing waters in the woods right now, she may be unable to hear resuers.
Do we have search&rescue dogs for these situations?

It’s going to be awfully cold in the woods tonight. Let’s home she finds some source of heat to tide her through until morning.

A whistle secured close to your collarbone is a good thing to have while hiking. I can’t remember the exact story but wasn’t there a lady in her seventies that was out for 12 days or something like that last year ? I hope she’s found soon . ❤
