LLCC: Men’s Basketball Fight Hard but Ultimately Fall to the Jaguars

Danville Area Community College- 77

Lincoln Land – 69

The Lincoln Land Loggers men’s basketball team came into Saturday with an opportunity to move into a tie for first place in the Mid-West Athletic Conference. However, the Jaguars of Danville Area Community College held off the Loggers 77-69 in overtime to remain in sole possession of first place.

Regulation wound down with each team looking like they had the final advantage. The Loggers led for most of the final ten minutes of the second half. Lincoln Land remained ahead by five with under three minutes to go in the contest.  Danville was able to convert back-to-back threes to take a one-point lead. The teams traded buckets and the lead over the next few possessions until Danville got a three with just over a minute to play to go up by two points. The Loggers missed going down the floor on offense but were able to muster a defensive stop to get the ball back trailing by two with 0:45 counting down on the clock. Axel Laby was able to get fouled on an offensive rebound and stepped to the line for two shots to tie the game. Laby knocked in both with 0:30 remaining and another Logger defensive stand sent the game to overtime.

The overtime period went entirely Danville’s way as the Loggers were outscored 9-1 and were unable to make a single field goal. DACC also forced two Logger turnovers that turned into easy buckets for the Jaguars in the extra frame. Over the afternoon, Danville Area was able to stay ahead of the Loggers by shooting 47% to Lincoln Land’s 37%. DACC out-rebounded LLCC 40-28 throughout the game. Danville paired that with going 17 for 20 from the free throw line to keep themselves ahead of the Loggers on the scoreboard.

Lincoln Land had a fairly balanced scoring effort with four players ending in double digits. Sophomore Moory Woods led the Loggers in scoring with 18. Sophomore Michael Ousley III added in 14 while also pulling in a team high of 9 rebounds, just missing a double-double. Freshman Dane Foster had one of his best scoring efforts of the conference season, putting in 14 as well. Freshman Cameron Kincaid was the last Logger to reach double digits by scoring 11.

The Loggers fall to 9-11 in the season and 3-2 in MWAC contests. LLCC has a week to recover before they return home attempting to avenge an earlier season loss next Saturday in Cass Gymnasium against Spoon River.
