Indiana beat No. 1 Purdue for their first win against a top-rated team since 2013. Will the Boilermakers stay atop the college basketball rankings?

Purdue went into the weekend as the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP Top 25. There was question about whether or not they’d hold that spot regardless of what went down at Assembly Hall on Sunday.

Now, voters are going to have to answer that question.

Indiana pulled off their biggest upset in years, downing the Boilermakers 79-74. The Hoosiers jumped out to a huge lead early, going into halftime ahead by 15 points. They withstood a furious second-half comeback attempt to lock in the victory on the back of Trayce Jackson’s 25 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

So will Purdue fall?

College basketball rankings: Projected Top 10 after Indiana upsets Purdue

  1. Purdue
  2. Houston
  3. Alabama
  4. Tennessee
  5. Arizona
  6. Texas
  7. Kansas
  8. UCLA
  9. Virginia
  10. Kansas State

Even with the loss, the 22-2 Boilermakers still have the best resumé in college basketball. Indiana may have brought them back to earth, but the loss to the No. 21 team in the country isn’t enough to give Houston or someone else the No. 1 spot.

Elsewhere behind Purdue, the rankings are sure to shift. Tennessee lost to Florida on Wednesday but beat No. 25 Auburn on Saturday. Texas beat Kansas State, who also lost to Kansas by 12 on Tuesday. However, the Jayhawks lost to No. 13 Iowa, so that section of the rankings is a mess. Virginia’s loss to Virginia Tech should also drop them down the order.

The rankings are getting tighter and tighter with March Madness seeding on the line but for now, Purdue can feel confident in their status as No. 1, even as they lick their wounds after the upset. They’ll look to rebound against Iowa next week.
